New Health and Nutrition Related Claims Standard
In January 2016, the new Health and Nutrition Related Claims Standard came into full effect for all food sold in Australia and New Zealand. The new standard sets out how much of a certain nutrient (such as fibre) you must have in a product to make a claim about that nutrient. It also puts into place requirements about making health claims – for example, any food carrying a health claim (such as fibre for digestive health) must also meet nutrient criteria called ‘Nutrient Profiling Scoring Criteria’. Health claims can also be chosen from a list, and there is also an opportunity for food companies to substantiate their own health claims, providing they meet strict criteria.
