Recent research from the Grains and Legumes Nutrition Council found that whilst more Australians are embracing grains, 6 in 10 chose refined over whole grains[1].

 

Breakfast can help fill the whole grain gap

Current whole grain intakes are less than half the recommended Grains and Legumes Nutrition target of 48 grams for health[2,3]. Selecting a whole grain food at breakfast, such as a whole grain breakfast cereal, can help to fill this gap.

3 Tips for Buying Whole Grains

It can be confusing to work out what is a whole grain. Here’s an easy guide for shopping:

  1. Look at the ingredients list for the word ‘whole’ e.g. wholemeal or whole grain wheat
  1. Look on the pack for a whole grain claim

  1. Look in the ingredients list for the name of the whole grain e.g. Whole oats, rye or barley. If it is the first ingredient of the list, this indicates that the food is likely to be at least a source of whole grain.
