UNCLE TOBYS Steel Cut Oats are all natural whole grain oat, steel cut for a full, hearty texture and rich nutty taste.
They have a nuttier flavour than other types of oats and they are chewier.
Steel Cut Oats have the outer husk from the kernel removed and are cut into pieces using steel discs (hence the name). This delivers a hearty texture and rich nutty taste.
Therefore, Steel Cut Oats take a little longer to cook than our Traditional Oats and are ready in approximately 20 minutes. However if you soak them overnight, you only need to cook the oats in a microwave for 2 minutes, which is great for busy mornings.
Steel Cut oats are coarser than Traditional Rolled Oats, but both varieties are complete whole grains with the bran and germ intact. Traditional Rolled Oats are steamed and rolled compared to Steel Cut Oats which are simply cut, the two have slight differences in texture, but both types have the same nutritional properties, which mirror those of quick-cooking oats and even instant oats.
Steel cut Oats are also low GI with a value of 48. The Glycemic Index (GI) is a relative ranking of carbohydrate in foods according to how they affect blood sugar (glucose) levels. Carbohydrates with a low GI value (55 or less) are more slowly digested, absorbed and metabolised and cause a lower and slower rise in blood glucose and, therefore usually, insulin levels
The UNCLE TOBYS name and logo has significant historical significance, it was designed by Nellie Love, the niece of Clifford Love – the founder of UNCLE TOBYS, who was a keen artist and a student of literature. She suggested the name and designed the logo based on the great literacy character in the “Life of Times of Tristram Shandy” by Laurence Sterne, first published in 1759. In the book Uncle Toby is a gentle, uncomplicated lover of his fellow man. The original design of Uncle Toby standing with the Widow Wadman has seen little changes over the years, so has become a treasured representation of the UNCLE TOBYS heritage.
