Understanding gluten

So what's the story with gluten and coeliac disease?

Gluten is a protein found in cereals such as wheat, rye, and barley. For the majority of people, it’s just another dietary nutrient and causes no issues. But for people with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease, an auto-immune disorder, the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten. Tiny projections in the gut become inflamed and flattened, reducing the gut’s surface area and making it difficult to absorb nutrients. This can result in gastrointestinal issues and small bowel damage.

The only medical treatment for people with coeliac disease is a strict gluten-free diet. Removing gluten from the diet allows the gut to heal and symptoms to improve.

If you suspect you have coeliac disease, see your doctor.

Are UNCLE TOBYS oats gluten-free?

UNCLE TOBYS oats are not gluten free. If you have coeliac disease or are following a gluten-free diet for other reasons, seek your doctor’s advice before consuming oats. Coeliac Australia and Coeliac New Zealand recommends that people with coeliac disease avoid oats because they may react to a protein in oats known as avenin. Regulations do not permit oats to be labelled as gluten-free in Australia or New Zealand. That’s because oats are a between-season crop, and they may become contaminated with other gluten containing ingredients like wheat, rye or barley in the field or factory.
