UNCLE TOBYS is a name that is synonymous with health, good nutrition, sun, surf and a vitality for life, for over 120 years. We started milling oats back in 1893, with the first UNCLE TOBYS Oats product introduced to the market by Clifford Love and Co in Sydney. It entered the homes and hearts of Australian families and we haven’t looked back since providing Australians with a vast range of nutritious and delicious breakfast cereals and snacks to help nourish the active Australian lifestyle. This is the UNCLE TOBYS story.
Following the gold rush in Australia, two brothers Leonard and George Parsons left England and started manufacturing John Bull Oats in Melbourne. In 1861 the Uncle Tobys Company was established, originally under the name of Parsons Bros.
The expansion of railway transport in the 1890s not only enabled more of Australia to be opened up for farming, but enabled the transportation of this produce to all over Australia. In 1893 the UNCLE TOBYS oats product was introduced to the market by Clifford Love and Co in Sydney and entered the homes and hearts of Australian families.
The recipe for thick and creamy porridge is the same today as it was in the 1890’s. You only need three simple ingredients: UNCLE TOBYS Traditional Oats, water or milk, and a little love! For the recipe, and ideas for delicious toppings, click here
Did you know oats were one of the earliest grains cultivated by man? Oats date as far back as 7,000 B.C. in Ancient China. The ancient Greeks were the first people known to have made a recognisable porridge from oats, which we still enjoy in Australia today!
In the 1970’s more women started entering the workforce, meaning they had less time to prepare food for their family. With more dual-income families in Australia, the market saw a significant increase in the consumption of packaged convenience foods. It was at this time that UNCLE TOBYS launched our first muesli bar, the Crunchola Bar (1976). Throughout the next decade we continued to launch all kinds of new products: LE SNAK, ROLL UPS, Yoghurt Topps, Oat Bran, VITABRITS, Muesli etc.
After harvest, the oats are delivered to the UNCLE TOBYS factory and stored in large silos. In order to preserve the quality of the oats the atmosphere in the silos is carefully maintained through aeration and an even, cool temperature. From here it only takes three steps: first the oats are cleaned and dried, then conditioned and rolled, and finally they are packaged up and on their way to you! For more info click here
UNCLE TOBYS Oats Original Quick Sachets have exactly the same nutritional value as our Traditional Rolled Oats, they’re just cut finer and rolled thinner to cook faster. And they still have only the one ingredient – oats! To learn more about our different oat products click here
The Uncle Tobys Company is synonymous with sport in Australia. This all started with our first sponsored athlete – and UNCLE TOBYS ambassador – swimmer Lisa Curry in 1983. Since then, swimming has been an integral part of UNCLE TOBYS for over 25 years, whether it’s at the beach, in the pool, or the Olympic stage. Like oats, swimming has long been a part of Australian culture, which is why we’ve always worked together to help inspire Australians to lead active and healthy lifestyles.
The Uncle Tobys Company helped support the growth of surf life saving in Australia through sponsoring the first professional Iron Man circuit from 1989-2001: The UNCLE TOBYS Super Series. The ambassadors at the time included Trevor Hardy, who is considered by many to be the greatest Iron Man of all time. He even beat David Hasselhoff in a Baywatch episode in 1996!
Following a long history of leading sportsmen and women, UNCLE TOBYS are proud to have swimming sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell as our ambassadors today. Between the two of them they’ve won multiple in the pool and have both represented Australia at the Olympics. But did you know they used to have a pet pig?

Oats are a natural superfood because they’re high in fibre, contain protein and are a minimally processed wholegrain. The beta-gluten in them not only helps to make your oats creamy, but helps lower cholesterol re-absorption^. To learn more about the nutritional properties of our oats click here

We are so lucky in Australia to have such beautiful fertile soil, and generations of families that have dedicated themselves to the land. We wouldn’t be here without them, which is why it’s so important for us to look after both our Aussie farmers and the environment.
From the farm to your bowl, UNCLE TOBYS oats are treated with consideration and care to produce plump golden grains. We also have a dedicated national oat-breeding program in partnership with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI). In fact most of the local growers in the area supply oats for the UNCLE TOBYS products, as Gerard says “UNCLE TOBYS is part of the landscape around here!” To hear more of Gerard’s story, click here

The UNCLE TOBYS name and logo has significant historical significance, it was designed by Nellie Love, the niece of Clifford Love – the founder of UNCLE TOBYS, who was a keen artist and a student of literature. She suggested the name and designed the logo based on the great literacy character in the “Life of Times of Tristram Shandy” by Laurence Sterne, first published in 1759. In the book Uncle Toby is a gentle, uncomplicated lover of his fellow man. The original design of Uncle Toby standing with the Widow Wadman has seen little changes over the years, so has become a treasured representation of the UNCLE TOBYS heritage.
