The logo
The UNCLE TOBYS name and logo has significant historical significance, it was designed by Nellie Love, the niece of Clifford Love – the founder of UNCLE TOBYS, who was a keen artist and a student of literature. She suggested the name and designed the logo based on the great literacy character in the “Life of Times of Tristram Shandy” by Laurence Sterne, first published in 1759. In the book Uncle Toby is a gentle, uncomplicated lover of his fellow man. The original design of Uncle Toby standing with the Widow Wadman has seen little changes over the years, so has become a treasured representation of the UNCLE TOBYS heritage.

Bringing Breakfast To The Family Table (1890’S)

Following the gold rush in Australia, two brothers Leonard and George Parsons left England and started manufacturing John Bull Oats in Melbourne. In 1861 the Uncle Tobys Company was established, originally under the name of Parsons Bros.

The expansion of railway transport in the 1890s not only enabled more of Australia to be opened up for farming, but enabled the transportation of this produce to all over Australia. In 1893 the UNCLE TOBYS oats product was introduced to the market by Clifford Love and Co in Sydney and entered the homes and hearts of Australian families.

Did you know oats were one of the earliest grains cultivated by man? Oats date as far back as 7,000 B.C. in Ancient China. The ancient Greeks were the first people known to have made a recognisable porridge from oats, which we still enjoy in Australia today!

Packaged Goodness (1970’S)

In the 1970’s more women started entering the workforce, meaning they had less time to prepare food for their family. With more dual-income families in Australia, the market saw a significant increase in the consumption of packaged convenience foods. It was at this time that UNCLE TOBYS launched our first muesli bar, the Crunchola Bar (1976). Throughout the next decade we continued to launch all kinds of new products: LE SNAK, ROLL UPS, Yoghurt Topps, Oat Bran, VITABRITS, Muesli etc.

The Packaging Process

After harvest, the oats are delivered to the UNCLE TOBYS factory and stored in large silos. In order to preserve the quality of the oats the atmosphere in the silos is carefully maintained through aeration and an even, cool temperature. From here it only takes three steps: first the oats are cleaned and dried, then conditioned and rolled, and finally they are packaged up and on their way to you! For more info click here

Australian Swimming (1980’S – current)

The Uncle Tobys Company is synonymous with sport in Australia. This all started with our first sponsored athlete – and UNCLE TOBYS ambassador – swimmer Lisa Curry in 1983. Since then, swimming has been an integral part of UNCLE TOBYS for over 25 years, whether it’s at the beach, in the pool, or the Olympic stage. Like oats, swimming has long been a part of Australian culture, which is why we’ve always worked together to help inspire Australians to lead active and healthy lifestyles.
